Foundation Set 4: Rank Focus Drill:

A Step to the Elements

Type: Drill, Response Kata

This drill is designed to physically teach you the definition of the five elements.  A description is written at the beginning of this handbook, but this low-paced drill gives you time to understand slight differences in the elements.  Its nature versus a lunge punch isn’t real, so it helps to emphasize that these are metaphor and not actually scripted attacks.

These movements are done from engaging range.  The assist will start in the Core Stance and feed lunge punches to the primary’s face. The primary must then respond accordingly.

Earth:

Start in Volcanic Titan Stance.  Crash down onto the wrist of the lunge punch, grab the wrist with your rear hand and pull into a leading hand palm strike to the face.

Water:

Start in Flowing Storm Stance.  Advance forward and outside of the attack.  As you do this, use your outside hand to grab the wrist of their punch like the handle bars of a bicycle.  Step behind so that the back of your knees are touching.  With your free hand, push their elbow down behind them to their Standing Weakness.

Fire:

Start in Blazing Hurricane Stance.  Step forward slightly with a circling backfist or fierce block to their attacking wrist.  Punch left to their stomach and right to their face with your floating arm.

Wind:

Start in Zephyr Golem Stance.  Dodge the lunge punch stepping forward and to the outside.  Check their fist with your nearest hand.  Spin in a circle on your outside leg until you land in a knee clamp.  Reach back then push or punch the stomach, neck, or face in the direction of your opposite foot.

Void:

Start in Tatsujin / Enlightened Soul Stance.  Defend against the punch while taking away their vision (touch their forehead or cover their eyes to simulate this).  Secure the fight in one manner.  Each round, find a different way to secure the fight.
