Dear Readers,
Martial Arts means a lot to me. When I was young, it was a physical outlet and a way to engage with my friends. In the military, it was a break from the norm, a chance to explore, and a community of great and diverse people. After that it has been a mix of things, an emotional anchor, a business venture, safety in a dangerous and hateful world, even a creative outlet.
My Martial Arts journey led me many places. Since I've been in Tacoma, my focus has been to pool the best from everything I've learned and every style I've trained. Just like each style, every student is completely different and has their own goals and motives for training. Whether it's for fitness, self-defense, competition, confidence, community, heightened skills, heck, even spiritual development, we've made a home for all of these things and people who need them in Warrior Path Martial Arts.
I look at every drill or fight as a conversation. I see martial arts techniques and principles as communication devices and ways to solve problems. To get a real feel for who we are as martial artists, we get handsy in class. This doesn't mean we spar everyday until we're bruised and beaten. We drill soft at first, so you can hit all day and not say ouch. Once partners get comfortable with the lessons and the shock of training calms down, we say when we want more intensity. This allows us to get comfortable with our techniques, and create perfect application while at the same time we're safely having fun!
Our lessons are based on the major fields of martial arts, based on what we may encounter walking around in a city like Tacoma or Olympia or Seattle. I made sure that everything we learn is relevant to today. Look, we've got a lot of stuff to deal with nowadays. There's no shortage of issues we face. After a long day of work we're sore and it's hard to get off the couch. And at times that feels fine to escape the impending social unrest or public health issues. We get told what to think about our bodies but not really given a chance to do anything about it. We try to connect with people, but it's hard when there's a screen between us. And we need to hear and be heard by our peeps, but where do we go for that?
Well, I choose Martial Arts. My own, specifically, go figure. In martial arts, my mentors have always taught me to consider those previous factors. They said that if I'm doing my martial arts right, it will pour on into my day-to-day life. So as I put together Warrior Path Martial Arts, I wanted to make sure that every student can come in here and get what they need.
Not everyone wanted to be some tournament winner or ancient-degree black belt. I had to spend a lot of years un-learning that (which was much easier with the help of my martial arts community). Everyone has their unique and personal challenges in life, and what I've learned is that people go in trying to find a way for martial arts to make them Stronger Than Life. Whatever that means to you, we'll help you figure that out.
So come. Step on the mat, show us who you are, and be a part of our community. Tacoma folk are good folk, I assure you. We can't wait for you to join us on the Martial Arts Path.
See you there,
-Kye-
